  • FACT:  Testing in-house is faster and equally as accurate as third-party testing.  In fact, in-house testing actually reduces your risk by letting you catch problems more quickly so they can be dealt with immediately.  This important point shouldn’t be overlooked.  Most facilities will see a pathogen issue at some time – and when it happens, it is imperative to detect it as soon as possible. The faster it can be discovered, after all, the faster it can be corrected before it gets out of control. Sending samples to a third-party laboratory delays this discovery. While you wait for results, pathogens could contaminate more and more products.

  • FACT:  Our DNA-based testing technologies require very minimal infrastructure allowing even the smallest operations the ability to set up a laboratory at negligible cost. Your space will need to meet a few simple requirements (such as being located separate from the production area) but these requirements are typically easy to meet in most facilities.  Once your lab is up and running, it quickly pays for itself with cost savings, faster results, and peace-of-mind knowing that the food leaving your facility is safe.

  • FACT:  You don’t need to hire a lab technician with an advanced biology degree to operate your in-house lab. While that was once true, today a staff member with basic food safety knowledge can confidently perform food safety testing.  Our AOAC-approved technologies use simple “cookbook” style protocols that are easy-to-follow, fast, and simple. And since most tests require as little as 20 minutes of hands on time, employees can still meet their other important job requirements.

    And don’t forget this other important but overlooked advantage of in-house testing: as your staff perform more testing themselves, they build up deep institutional knowledge of the testing program and food safety in general – making them better able to respond in case of an outbreak.

  • FACT:  In-house testing makes sense whether you also use a third-party laboratory or not.  Many clients use our Hunter® system in-house to quickly screen food and environmental samples as an added layer of security or as an early-warning system for detecting food pathogen issues.  This gives them the confidence to know that their facilities are clean while waiting for third-party analysis results and the gives them flexibility to ramp up testing in case there is an issue.

Salmonella Testing at a High Volume Fish Meal Processing Unit 
THE CHALLENGE:

We received an urgent call from an Alaska based seafood producer who exports fishmeal used globally for aqua farming.   They were competitively bidding to supply new customers  high tonnage of fishmeal for Asian fish farms.  There was a tight deadline for startup and the fish meal producer’s potential customer had the strictest requirements to certify and document product as Salmonella-free prior to shipments.

The producer’s isolated plant location meant shipping samples to a contract lab would take from 5-15 days to turnaround results.  The fishmeal would be at considerable risk of spoilage during that period and demands of the new client’s continous operations couldn’t be interrupted.  If a positive result was found, a large amount of inventory could be compromised and the client could look for supply options.

Initially, they sought to reduce the time to set up a testing method and to get fast results.  They tried what they thought would be quick and easy.  They chose on-site immuno-assay (“dip-stick”) testing but got stung by a consistently high level of false positives resulting in undue waste during their initial contract period.  They truly needed to resolve the situation seamlessly for their client and therefore had with no time to waste.

They wanted an actual quick start up of an accurate, timely, and easy-to-use solution for on-site testing.

THE SOLUTION:

InstantLabs swung into action, conducted an important validation study demonstrating that the Hunter® system would generate accurate results consistent with samples sent to a contract laboratory.   InstantLabs then went the distance—to Alaska, installed the Hunter® system on-site and trained existing staff in less than half a day.  The client now tests and clears samples in less than 12 hours.  In the context of fishmeal production, InstantLabs has given them the ability to significantly reduce waste, correct any contamination issues promptly and cost effectively.  They are satisfying their customer needs and gaining more business.
